| | Transporting Lives at Preston Hall | YOUNGSTERS from a Billingham school who took part in an artwork project are launching an exhibition of their work as well as a weekend of free art, craft and drama activities at a Stockton Museum.
The "Transporting Lives" exhibition by St Michael RC School pupils who took part in the project will open Saturday, 19 March, at 11.30am at Preston Hall Museum, Stockton.
The project explores the themes of sustainability and transport through an innovative series of museum workshops and creative art days and is being run by Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon in partnership with a number of other museums in the North East and Busy Ape Arts.
Paul Lake, Visitor Services Manager for Stockton Council, said: "The "Transporting Lives" exhibition is a great opportunity to see some excellent works of art by local youngsters based on the unique history of the Borough and the first passenger railway."

| | Positive response to Billingham Town Centre consultation | THE first stage of consultation on the future of Billingham Town Centre has proved a success with hundreds of people already having had their say.
Research staff are currently in Billingham Town Centre asking shoppers and visitors to fill in a survey asking for their views on what they would and wouldn't like in any new development.
The survey is also available at www.stockton.gov.uk and people have until March 11 to complete and return the survey.
Around 80 representatives from residents and community groups attended a consultation evening at Billingham Arms Hotel this week to put forward their ideas and suggestions and officers from Stockton Council were there to listen and facilitate the idea sharing sessions.
Youngsters from Youth Viewpoint and Billingham User Group (Connexions) have also been involved in the consultation and one youngster submitted a drawing of what he wanted to see in the new look Town Centre.
Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development, said: "I am delighted we have had a response from so many people and there are emerging a number of common issues - the general environment of the Town Centre, the toilets and the range of shops and there is still another week of this first stage of consultation.
"It is interesting to see young people contributing and having a say on the future of their town and their suggestions, along with all the others, will be given to the developers, Halladale, for them to work into any early designs." | | Big Draw exhibition celebrates the Tees | BILLINGHAM Art Gallery is celebrating a national drawing campaign taking part in 1000 venues and including 500,000 people across the UK.
Stockton Museums are celebrating Big Draw 2004 from 23 October to 27 November with an exhibition drawing on the River Tees as its inspiration and featuring contributions produced at the new SPARK children's art centre from youngsters at the Oak Tree Primary School.
There will also be a display of artwork created at another open workshop held at Preston Hall Museum where members of the public joined in drawing a variety of exciting and colourful pictures of the life and landscape of the River Tees.
Billingham Art Gallery will be holding a free crafts workshop itself on Wednesday, 27 October from 1 - 4pm where all ages and abilities can join in.
The exhibition in Stockton Borough is being funded through Renaissance in the Regions, a government funding programme for museums.
Kate Mahaffy, Exhibitions Officer for Stockton Council, said: "Big Draw events connect people of all ages with their cultural and natural environment through drawing and as we will soon be entering the Year of the Tees the river was the ideal choice for the exhibition theme."
The Billingham Art Gallery is open 9am - 5pm, Monday - Friday and can be contacted on (01642) 397590 for more information. | | Art society | Art society celebrates milestone anniversary
The Stockton and Billingham Art Society is celebrating a milestone anniversary next week with an exhibition of local artists' work.

| 'Pod'
16/07/2004 | First 'Pod' for Billingham
YOUNG people in Billingham can look forward to the area's first "Pod", a state-of-the-art mobile youth centre fitted out with sound systems and computers, thanks to a Safer Stockton Partnership scheme to cut anti-social behaviour.
The "Pod" will be based first in the area of Station Road and Billingham Green, where it is expected to open later in July and remain for 10 - 11 months, before a possible move to other sites in Billingham.
Young people will be able to use sports equipment for football, cricket and basketball, watch a DVD or play a computer game as well as meet with friends for a chat. Youth workers from the Corner House Youth Project and Stockton Council's youth service will act as responsible adults to supervise the Pod, supported by visits from Police Community Support Officers and the Council's Community Wardens.
Safer Stockton - a partnership between the Police, Stockton Council and other organisations - is funding the POD through a Government programme to support 'Small Retailers in Deprived Areas'. The partnership put forward the idea following complaints about anti-social behaviour around the shops.
The idea has the full backing of local Ward Councillors and similar specially adapted steel site cabins have been used in nearby Darlington with considerable success.
Councillor Barry Woodhouse, Stockton Council's cabinet member for the North Borough, said: "I am very pleased that we have been able to secure this scheme for Billingham. It will give young people somewhere to go, help to address some of the complaints we have had about the lack of youth facilities for them, and reduce concern about anti-social behaviour around the local shops."
Councillor Martyn Ingram, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, added: "This is a good example of working together at the local level, and I welcome it."

| | 12th July 2004 | Welcome to Just-Billingham.com
Billingham has, in the past, had a number of website initiatives. All of which have failed at the first hurdle.
Commercial interests, ulterior motives and just plain misguided intentions have plotted to disgrace a number of these attempts.
In reality and with the right skills, it costs very little to set up and run a successful website. We have the skills and what's more we have a proven track record in providing local, useful, no nonsense community based websites in this area.
Our aim is simply to make ourselves redundant. We will never hide that fact. If we can cover the costs of owning the site through advertising that will suffice.
We will be actively fostering relationships within the area to bring you the type of content we feel you want to see. Our views on what is important will change as you contribute to the site but we will remain dedicated to offering useful and relevant content to the residents of Billingham.
What we're driving at here is that this is a community site and it is your community site. You can dictate the direction of the site and you can contribute to the content of the site.
We will censor nothing but the obscene. We allow you a forum for your concerns, wants and needs.
The site is split into a number of areas, each of which you can add to.
The forum - to discuss any matter you wish
The chat room - to chat in real time
selfServe - to add to many of the website areas i.e. What's On, Local News
Classifieds... - to sell those things gathering dust in the garage/loft
Most of these need no explanation suffice to say that you can add to almost every page on this site and in doing so will dictate the direction and usefulness of the site.
WE NEED YOU!
We need people to submit local news, we need people to tell us more than we already know about Billinghams history, we need people to tell us what matters to them. We are ideally placed to offer a means to establish and publish support for your campaign, to hold and publish details of your meetings or to simply advertise your activities.
This really is your site, the first site to allow you to speak freely without commercial constraint or political pressure.
Use us.
Yours,
Gary & Andy, Directors, Clear Chaos
This will be the first and last plug we give ourselves.
